A smaller ship connected to the ship was damaged by some of the fallen containers, according to Unified Command, including the American Coast Guard, the Long Beach Fire and Police Department, the port of Long Beach and the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Mississippi arrived in Long Beach from the Chinese Yantian port, according to LSEG data.
Freight operations in the terminal were temporarily suspended when crews worked to secure the containers, said Art Marroquin, Port of Long Beach Public Information Officer.
The incident is being investigated, Marroquin added.
