40,000 liters of sewage water comes in sanitary sewer system on Tybee Island

Tybee Island, go. (WSAV) – The third sewerage spill of the summer took place during the heavy storms on Saturday.

According to a statement from the city of Tybee, an estimated 40,000 liters of sewer and rainwater mixture has been transferred to Horsepen Creek, according to a statement from the city of Tybee. This, after having seen more than five centimeters of rain this weekend that saturated the ground.

The city said it had immediate control, but despite efforts, Mangaten Avenue, 8th Street and other locations have spilled.

“Crews worked the afternoon to stop the leaks and then worked in the evening to clean up the sparrows,” said the city. “Sand bags that are already on location helped to reduce the leak.”

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GEPD) and the health department were informed of the incident, together with other agencies.

The city also said that after the last leakage action, it has taken action, including the increase of mangats with four feet, installing new castings, watertight sealing mangatics, cleaning hidden drains and contracting an external company to clean sanitary sewer lines at 12 different locations.

According to the statements, the city of Tybee has future projects to improve the infrastructure of the island and to reduce the flood risk, including sewer lines of rehabilitation and expansion.
