More than 140 people fell ill in an outbreak of gastrointestinal diseases during a Royal Caribbean International Cruise.
Among the 3,914 guests on board his navigator of the Seas ship, 134 reported to be sick during a cruise that ended on July 11, together with seven crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their most important symptoms were vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
The health agency mentioned the causal agent as unknown. According to CruiseMapper, the ship sailed a cruise of a week to Mexico return from Los Angeles.
The cruise line implemented increased disinfection and cleaning measures and isolated sick guests and crew, among other things, the CDC said.
“The health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities that we visit are our top priority,” a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of De Lijn, told USA Today in a e -mail statement. “To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety on board our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which are much higher than the Guidelines for Public Health.”
There have been 18 outbreaks of gastrointestinal disorders on cruises that met the threshold of the CDC in 2025, most of which were caused by Norovirus. Last year there were 18 outbreaks in total and 14 in 2023.
The CDC told USA Today in April that although “the number of recent outbreaks of cruise ships has been higher than in years prior to the pandemic, we do not yet know whether this is a new trend.”
“However, CDC data shows that a new dominant tribe is currently being associated with reported norovirus outbreaks on the land,” the agency said in an E -mail statement. “Ships usually follow the pattern of outbreaks on the land, which are higher this norovirus season.”
The disease is often associated with cruise ships, but they only represent 1% of all reported outbreaks.
