The promise of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to issue $ 100 billion extra on advanced factories in the US will do little to help the country restore its global lead in Chipmeting, according to Pat Gelsinger, who was challenged at the end of last year as Chief Executive of Intel.
His comments come less than a month after the White House had praised the investment of TSMC, the world's largest chip manufacturer, as an important milestone in attempts to reduce the production of the most advanced semiconductors to the American soil.
“If you don't have R&D in the US, you won't have a semiconductor leader in the US,” said Gelsinger. “All the R&D work of TSMC is in Taiwan, and they have not made announcements to move that.”
