Story: Shoppers in the US see egg prices rise and buy limits that are imposed as a result of an outbreak of bird flu that influences the supply.
Stores such as Trader Joe's now limit egg purchases to just a dozen per customer.
And it's all just a blow again for consumers after years of rising prices.
This shopper was unhappy, but tried to be understanding:
“I saw a store, Trader Joe's, who was limited to a dozen, but their prices were cheaper than many other places. Their price I happened to see was $ 4.99 and I think Walmart's was six. So I understand where they “I do it.
Until now, the outbreak of birds in the US has contaminated nearly 70 people, mainly agricultural workers, since April.
The H5N1 virus has also increased egg prices by killing millions of chickens.
Supply Chain expert Matt Sutton-Vermeulen from consultancy firm Kearney explains:
“The price of eggs has risen due to this question -question relationship. It is a very inelastic goods, which means it does not do, the demand for not moving when the supply is tightened and so the price unfortunately goes up.”
Authorities have also found a second tribe of bird flu at dairy cattle – picking up worries about its distribution.
Experts are also afraid that the virus no longer seems connected to the movement of wild birds:
“Usually in the past, you know, in the historical view of the virus, we have seen it stop, we have seen it peak and fall around the migration flights. But we no longer see that. We see a more prevailing state of illness.”
Last week, supervisors closed the poultry markets in New York City and some adjacent provinces in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease.
