Seven police officers were shot after responding to a call late Wednesday about a family member in need of immediate assistance at a San Antonio apartment, police said.

However, when police responded to the scene, they were shot one after another, according to San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus.

The suspect was found shot to death inside the apartment after a standoff lasting several hours, McManus said. They are still investigating whether it was self-inflicted or by the SWAT team that was called in, he said.

All officers are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The first officer to respond was shot in the lower extremities, while the second officer fired shortly afterwards, police said.

A third officer then arrived on the scene and was shot before a fourth officer responded and was struck by a bullet in the upper body, police confirmed.

No further details have been given about the other three officers.

The identities of the police officers involved have not yet been released, but McManus said each had between four and eight years of experience on the force.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, has not yet been identified except by police.

Police said the suspect involved in the Jan. 18 shooting was arrested on two counts of assault and driving under the influence. He was currently out on bond, McManus said.
