Roswell police officer rams vehicle while responding to crash

    Jan. 22—A 66-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning after a Roswell police officer crashed into his car while responding to another call.

    The crash happened on North Main Street around 9:50 p.m., according to a social media post from the Roswell Police Department.

    The officer was driving south on North Main Street, responding to a two-vehicle collision with his lights and sirens on, when a northbound Oldsmobile driven by Howard Peterson made a left turn across the southbound lanes. was driving in the direction and “directly in front of the RPD unit,” resulting in the collision between Seventh and Sixth streets, police said.

    Peterson died in a hospital. The officer was treated at a hospital and is expected to recover, police said.

    The officer has been with RPD for five years, including one year as a police officer and the last four years as an officer, RPD said.

    An administrative investigation will be conducted to review the officer's actions, police said.

    “The Roswell Police Department sends our thoughts and prayers to Mr. Peterson's family,” Police Chief Lance Bateman said in a statement. “This tragic crash will be further investigated by our Traffic Division and internally to ensure the officer involved followed department policies and procedures regarding the emergency operation of his department vehicle.”
