Several Middletown residents told News Center 7 they watched Vance grow up.

“I actually rode his bus for two years, in 7th and 8th grade,” Connie Hamilton said.

“I didn't notice it until a week ago, so I went to the same high school he went to,” Combs said.

The city of Middletown and Middletown City Schools congratulated Vance on social media Monday.

“Vance's journey, from his roots in Middletown through his career as an author, veteran and U.S. Senator, highlights the diverse potential of our students.
