IBM is releasing new AI models for businesses as competition in genAI increases

(Reuters) – IBM on Monday released the latest version of its artificial intelligence models aimed at enterprises, looking to capitalize on the wave of companies adopting generative AI technology.

“Granite 3.0” models will be made open-source, similar to other versions in IBM's Granite family of AI models. This approach differs from competitors like Microsoft who charge customers for access to their models.

In turn, IBM offers a paid tool called Watsonx, which allows models to be run in data centers after they have been modified.

Some variants of the new Granite models will be available for commercial use on the Watsonx platform from Monday. A selection of these models will also be available in Nvidia's stack of software tools that allow companies to integrate AI models.

The new Granite models were trained using AI chip leader Nvidia's H100 graphics processing units (GPUs), said Dario Gil, IBM's director of research.
