12-year-old boy dies after falling from balcony of cruise ship en route to Texas

    A 12-year-old boy has died after falling from a balcony during a Royal Caribbean cruise.

    The young boy fell to his death on board the Harmony of the Seas while sailing to Galveston, Texas, at the end of a week-long voyage. He fell from a balcony on Deck 8, known as the ship's “Central Park” area where many restaurants and shops are located, PEOPLE reports.

    “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of our guests,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement. “Our care team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time.

    “For the privacy of the guest and his family, we have no further details to share,” the spokesperson added.

    The boy's identity has not yet been established and it is not yet clear what caused him to fall from the balcony.

    Just last month, a British man reportedly fell overboard from the Royal Caribbean fleet. Explorer of the seas cruise near Croatia. The search was called off after almost 40 hours.

    “Since the man has been in the sea for more than 40 hours, we are already losing hope,” Sanjin Dumanic, president of the Association of Croatian Captains, said at the time.

    “We all want him to be found, but 40 hours is a very long time and we are losing hope that this search will end successfully.”

    In May, a passenger died after jumping overboard from Royal Caribbean's largest cruise ship, which departed from Florida.

    The man would of the Icon of the seas after it left a port in Florida. He was rescued from the water and brought back on board before succumbing to his injuries.

    The cruise line said in a statement that it would not provide details about his identity.
