NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Mark Deane, one of WGNO's longtime sports producers, tragically passed away Friday morning at the age of 48 after being struck in a car accident in New Orleans.

According to the Louisiana State Police, officers from LSP Troop B responded to the multi-vehicle crash on the Crescent City Connection Bridge at approximately 7:30 a.m. on August 23.

Preliminary investigation reportedly revealed that Deane was driving a 2021 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on the bridge when a 2000 Toyota Camry driven by Alberto Martinez-Sanchez, 29, of Gretna, struck the rear of the motorcycle, sending Deane and the Yamaha airborne. The Camry then struck the rear of a 2023 Nissan Rogue.

Deane was wearing a helmet at the time, but was pronounced dead at the scene. Martinez-Sanchez was well-trained and was uninjured. The driver of the Nissan was also well-restrained and unharmed.

In this case, there was no deterioration in performance, but standard toxicological samples were nevertheless taken and sent for analysis.

Martinez-Sanchez was arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Lockup on manslaughter and other traffic-related charges.

“The New Orleans Police Department is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Mark Deane, a respected sports producer at WGNO, who was killed this morning in a traffic collision,” said New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick. “Mark was not only a colleague to many in our media community, but also a friend whose passion and dedication to his work have had a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to Mark's family, friends and the entire WGNO team during this difficult time.”

The entire WGNO family is saddened by the loss of Deane and it is an especially hard blow as it follows the recent loss of WGNO's legendary sportscaster Ed Daniels.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
