The X account of the campaign group White Dudes for Harris was suspended on Monday, apparently just minutes after its first fundraising event raised $4 million for Vice President Kamala Harris' 2024 presidential campaign.
When asked on his personal X account why the organization, which had over 13,000 X followers, was blocked, organizer Ross Morales Rocketto simply replied, “It scared Elon Musk.”
A backup account for the organization was launched Monday afternoon, writing in response to questions that “@dudes4harris was Ross’s original account that got suspended for some reason.” That backup account was approaching 5,000 at the time of publication.
The reasons why the White Dudes for Harris account on X was blocked are still unknown, but many people online on Monday condemned the election interference on the social media platform, especially since owner Elon Musk is an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump for re-election. The tech billionaire endorsed the former president after his attempted assassination at a rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month.
“The 'free speech absolutist' has now suspended White Dudes for Harris. Probably because they raised $4 million in a few hours. The fascists are scared to death. Good,” wrote one verified supporter.
Representatives for White Dudes for Harris did not respond to TheWrap's request for comment on the news. Representatives for X could not be reached for comment.
The first White Dudes for Harris event kicked off Monday night with a digital fundraiser that included The Dude himself, Jeff Bridges, and a host of other white, male celebrities, including Mark Hamill, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bradley Whitford, Sean Astin, and Josh Groban.
In total, the event raised $4 million for Harris' presidential campaign against Republican candidate Trump.
“I accepted the invitation and was brought to the party, not so much because I’m white, which I certainly am, but because I’m a guest, you know, I qualify, man. I’m white, I’m a guest, and I’m for Harris,” Bridges told the crowd, which numbered in the tens of thousands.
In a clip of the speech posted on social media by The Tennessee Holler, the Oscar winner enthused, “I'm excited, man. I think the fact that Joe has passed the baton so beautifully, I can see her as president. I'm so excited. A female president, man. That's exciting! You know, and her fight for women's rights — for that, and her stand on the environment, and taking care of our children, you know, all of her leadership in that area is amazing. And something I can get behind.”
