    Mali’s workers feel pressure as sanctions take effect

    Mohamed Cisse employed hundreds of workers in the Malian capital of Bamako before economic sanctions closed borders and cut the lifeblood of his construction company last month. The main ingredient, clinker, comes from neighboring Senegal, where all goods except essential goods are blocked. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) wanted to send a strong signal to Mali’s military leaders when it imposed sanctions after the junta postponed plans to hold elections in February following two coups.
