8 bodies found, possibly kidnapped workers from Mexican resort

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Eight bodies were found Saturday in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, and they appear to belong to eight men apparently abducted from a resort on the Caribbean coast.

Prosecutors in the Yucatan state said the bodies were likely those of men abducted in the laid-back resort town of Xcalak.

Xcalak, sometimes spelled Xcalac — the spelling used by prosecutors — is located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, near Belize.

At least seven and possibly eight men have been reported to have been abducted from a ranch in Xcalak on Friday.

The bodies were found by a farmer in a field in a Yucatan village just across the border from Quintana Roo. Yucatan prosecutors said they did not appear to have been killed where they were found, and were likely simply dumped there.

Officials have not identified the kidnapped men, but local media reported that they were workers on a coastal farm.

So far, Xcalak had been largely spared the violence that has plagued other beach towns in the state of Quintana Roo. However, it is known that packages of drugs washed up there in the past.
