DUXBURY – Two children, a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, are dead and an 8-month-old was flown to a Boston-area hospital with serious injuries after being discovered in a home in Duxbury on Tuesday night.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said first responders rushed to the home at 47 Summer St. just after 6 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from a male resident.

Cruz said the man reported an attempted suicide of an adult female resident who jumped from a window in the home.

First responders discovered the three children, all unconscious with obvious signs of trauma, Cruz said.

“A 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy were transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead,” Cruz said at a news conference. An update on the 8-month-old’s condition was not immediately available.

“This is an unimaginable, senseless tragedy and it’s an ongoing investigation,” Cruz said.

He said the woman was the mother of the three children, but no further information was released.

Duxbury resident Tom McGrath said, “It’s like, How could this happen here? But you put yourself in the man’s shoes and you can’t imagine how devastating that is.”

Cruz would not say whether the children’s mother is a suspect.

“It’s an ongoing investigation and we’ll see where that leads us,” Cruz said. “We are currently in the process of getting information on our search warrants to make sure we do whatever it takes to enter the home legally to make the decisions we need to make.”

He said authorities were still in the process of notifying the next of kin.

Cruz said the woman was alive but did not elaborate on her condition.

“This is an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the community,” Duxbury Police Chief Michael Carbone said.
