STEVENS PASS, Wash. – Skiers and riders at Stevens Pass Ski Resort are raising concerns about the increase in equipment theft at the property, with many accusing the owner, Vail Resorts, of not taking enough action.
A growing number of skiers and snowboarders are sharing their frustrations, saying they can no longer leave their gear unattended on racks while taking a break at the lodge.
To address this issue, a petition launched on Change.org is calling on Vail Resorts to reinstate ski check service at the resort. The petition has collected more than 200 signatures.
“The widespread theft of equipment has cast a significant shadow on our love for the sport and the resort,” the petition reads. “With ever-increasing ticket prices and growing costs for resort amenities, it seems like the least we can expect is a measure of the safety and value of our equipment.”
In response to these growing complaints, Stevens Pass VP and General Manager, Ellen Galbraith, says safety is a top priority for the resort.
“Reports of equipment theft are low and lower than at this time last year, and we want to assure our guests that our team continues to invest in measures and resources to prevent theft,” said Galbraith.
“These include a trained and experienced security team, security cameras throughout the resort, seasonal lockers available for rent in the base area and ski locks available in our shop for $15.”
FOX 13 also contacted the King County Sheriff's Office to check if any reports had been filed about stolen equipment at Stevens Pass. They confirmed they are looking into the matter but need more details to dig further.
