    STORY::: Putin proposes a missile duel with the US to prove that Russia's Oreshnik missiles can trump any defense system

    :: Moscow, Russia

    :: Vladimir Putin, Russian President

    :: “There is no chance of shooting down these Oreshnik missiles. Well, if the Western experts you mentioned think they can be shot down, we suggest that they – and those in the West and the United States who pay them for their analysis – a kind of technological experiment, a high-tech duel of the 21st century. Let them name an object, say, in Kiev, concentrate all their air defense and missile defense forces there, and we will attack it with Oreshnik and see what is happening. We are ready for an experiment. Is the other side ready?'

    Responding to Western skepticism about the Oreshnik, Putin suggested that both sides choose a designated target that would be protected by US missiles.

    Putin also said that Oreshnik was a modern weapon, although it is based on previous Russian design developments.

    Russia first fired the Oreshnik missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on November 21, in response to Ukraine's first use of US ATACM's ballistic missiles and British Storm Shadows to attack Russian territory with Western authorization.
