The recently nominated vice-chairman of the 6 January committee has historically voted conservative.
speak on the Texas Tribune festivalWyoming Rep. Liz Cheney said she would relinquish her political party if Trump becomes the next Republican candidate for president.
“I’m going to make sure that Donald Trump — I’m going to do everything I can to make sure he’s not the nominee,” Cheney told The Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith during the hour-long interview.
“And if he’s the nominee, I won’t be a Republican,” she added.
Cheney, a second-generation Republican leader, has historically voted conservative, echoing the political legacy of her father, Dick Cheney, who served as vice president under Republican President George W. Bush.
The vice chair of the Jan. 6 commission has long made it clear that she is separated from her party’s support for former President Trump, despite largely supporting his policies. Newsweek reported that Cheney voted with Trump 93% of the time while in office, but the two have publicly argued over her refusal to support him personally.
“If I knew what I know now, I wouldn’t have voted for Donald Trump,” Cheney said during the interview.
The recently nominated representative was a key member of the Republican House in the investigation into the January 6 attack on the Capitol. A political strategist told Insider that her campaign loss could allow Cheney to be bolder in the actions she takes against the former president, as she no longer has to campaign in front of a Republican audience that still largely supports Trump.
Cheney representatives did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
