Johnny Depp’s lawyers rejected Amber Heard’s post-trial interview, accusing her of “rethinking” the defamation lawsuit as he tried to move forward.
Heard sat down with Savannah Guthrie of the “Today” show for her first post-trial interview, which ended with the jury choosing Depp for all three of his defamation claims and awarding Heard only one of her three counterclaims.
The show “Today” aired parts of the interview on Tuesday and Wednesday, and plans to air the full hour-long interview on NBC’s “Dateline” on Friday night. NBC is the parent company of the show “Today”.
In a 20-minute preview of the interview, released Thursday on Peacock, Depp’s legal team responded to Heard’s interview, accusing her of dwelling on the legal battle as Depp moved on.
βIt is unfortunate that, as Johnny wants to move forward with his life, the defendant and her team are repeating, rethinking and re-challenging cases already decided by the court and a verdict that has been unequivocally determined by a jury. from Johnny,” Depp’s legal team told Dateline, the New York Post reported.
The Depp team’s statement did not specify which part of the interview with Heard they were referring to. Depp’s lawyers did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
The preview clip also showed Heard discussing additional evidence that she felt should have been included in the trial and strengthened her case, the Post reported.
“There’s a folder of years of notes dating back to 2011 from the very beginning of my relationship that were made by my doctor, to whom I reported the abuse,” Heard said in the preview clip, according to the Post.
The judge had rejected Heard’s legal team’s folder during the trial because of “hearsay,” the Post reported.
Heard’s legal team told Insider in an email, “If Mr. Depp or his team has a problem with this, we recommend Johnny herself sit down with Savannah Gutherie for an hour and answer all of her questions.”
Depp sued Heard for defamation after the publication of a 2018 Washington Post op-ed calling herself a victim of domestic violence, without naming Depp. Heard then contradicted, saying that Depp and his legal team were defaming her.
In her “Today” interview, Heard said she would stick with her testimony “until my dying day.” She also insisted that she spoke “the truth against power” during the trial, but that she would not blame the jury for the verdict in favor of her ex-husband.
