Apparently Hertz's removal of electric vehicles from its fleet is not happening fast enough for the car rental giant. A Reddit user posted an offer he received from Hertz to buy the 2023 Tesla Model 3 he rented for $17,913.
Hertz initially went big on electric vehicles, announcing a plan to buy 100,000 Model 3s for its fleet by the end of 2021, but had only acquired half that amount 16 months later. The company found that repair costs – especially for Teslas, which averaged 20 percent more than other electric vehicles – were cutting into profit margins. Customer demand was also not what Hertz had hoped for; Last January, the company announced plans to sell 20,000 electric vehicles.
Asking customers to buy their rental properties is not a new strategy for Hertz. “By connecting our rental customers who sign up for our emails to our sales channels, we are not only raising awareness of the fact that we are selling an arsenal, but also offering a unique opportunity to someone who may be looking for the same car like them. on rent,” Hertz communications director Jamie Line told The Verge.
Hertz advertises a 12-month, 12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty for each EV, and customers have seven days to return the car if there's major buyer's remorse.
According to The Verge, deals range from $18,422 for a 2023 Chevy Bolt to $28,500 for a Polestar 2. When we last checked, we saw some good deals from Hertz, some of which still qualify for a federal tax credit .
However, Hertz's EV sale may be expiring. Last March we saw more than 2,100 BEVs for sale on the company's used car site. When we checked this morning there were only 175 left.
