Farm Show snow: what to expect on Monday

We did it again! Every year it seems like we find another snow opportunity around the time of the PA Farm Show. There were snow showers covering many parts of the Midstate on Friday, but the main event is next Monday. While we're not in the bullseye this time, we still have the chance of several inches in most places, which would be the heaviest snowfall of the season for most.

The low pressure center of our storm in question will pass through Virginia and North Carolina. That the center of the system is so far south means that the Midstate will not be the recipient of the heaviest snow, but will be captured by the northern edge of the snow band. That's not to say some areas won't experience heavy snowfall. Especially closer to the Maryland border, in places like Gettysburg and Chambersburg, more than an inch of snow could fall per hour on Monday.

As for timing, we will see a steady snowfall at sunrise, lasting all day before tapering off in the evening. For the morning, it's important to pay attention to the radar when planning your commute. Temperatures will remain below freezing all day, so accumulation on the roads and bridges should not be difficult. Since this is our first plowable snow of the season, extra time will need to be allowed for your travels.

Because the heaviest snow amounts are south of the Mason-Dixon line, it becomes less and less wintery the further north we go. Areas closest to the Maryland border will likely get between 3 and 6 inches of snow, while some mountainous areas could get a little more than that. North of the turnpike, snow totals are in the 1-3″ range. Should our system's track wobble even a little bit, the total numbers will change. We will continue to inform you about expectations this weekend. Not a system to panic about, but one to keep in mind for Monday!
