Other Republicans have rebuked Biden’s comments, calling them “divisive.”
Former President Donald Trump responded to President Joe Biden’s condemnation of “MAGA Republicans” by calling the president an “enemy of the state” at a Saturday rally in Pennsylvania.
Biden spoke of “threats to American democracy,” which he says were raised by staunch Trump supporters during a prime-time address at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park on Thursday.
“MAGA troops are determined to send this country backwards. Back to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to birth control, no right to marry those you love,” Biden said. “They promote authoritarian leaders and fan the flames of political violence.”
Biden’s speech came days after he railed against the “MAGA philosophy,” which he described as “semi-fascism.”
At the meeting, Trump replied, saying the speech was “cruel, hateful and divisive” and accused the president of not even remembering his speech the next morning.
“This week, Joe Biden came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to deliver the most brutal, hateful, and divisive speech ever delivered by a US president. Defaming 75 million citizens… as threats to democracy and enemies of the state, Trump said. “You are all enemies of the state. He is an enemy of the state.”
Trump also referred to the red lighting behind Biden during his speech, saying he looked “like the devil”.
Multiple Republican leaders expressed contempt in response to Biden’s comments as he continues the offensive against Trump and his supporters. Ronna McDaniel, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, called Biden a “chieftain” in an earlier statement to Insider.
Saturday’s performance in Pennsylvania marks Trump’s first rally since the FBI’s Aug. 8 search of his residence in Mar-a-Lago. The agency found more than 100 classified documents – including top secret documents – in the country club.
A Biden spokesperson did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
