E3 may not be happening this year, but Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest has stepped in to provide the fire department with hype-filled trailers and game announcements that would normally take place during an E3 week.

Alien’s Dark Descent showed a heavily cinematic trailer featuring the titular aliens and very reminiscent of James Cameron’s films. Short gameplay scenes showed a squadron of Marines firing at Xenomorphs from an isometric perspective. Coming to Xbox and PlayStation consoles and PC in 2023.
The Callisto protocol was the first of many Summer Game Fest games to come out strong Empty space vibes, right down to the camera angle. A short trailer and gameplay demo highlighted the “extra gore” including ghostly enemies and the protagonist being eaten by the blades of a giant fan and motorized gear. Coming to consoles and PC on December 2.
Flashback 2 is a sequel 30 years in the making that takes the original 1992 2D puzzle platformer to a new generation. The game was announced last month and a very short teaser showed hard to parse scenes with lots of careful walking to the right and a 3D engine part. Coming to PlayStation and Xbox consoles and PC in the winter of 2022, followed by the Switch in 2023.
Fortress Solis features Troy Baker’s vocal talents as a medical officer in the titular fortress, where something terrible happens on a lonely planet where help is not close at hand. The thriller is described as “Empty space meet Duncan Jones’ Moonwith a focus on discovery and many different modes of travel. There is no announced release date for this Steam release yet.
storm gate pre-rendered movie trailer in which a lone archaeologist finds a powerful shield on a seemingly deserted planet. But when she’s attacked by huge, winged demons streaming through a “storm gate,” she has to hide behind that shield while getting some help from a soldier in a railgun-equipped mecha suit. A developer of the free-to-play real-time strategy game promised “no play-to-win,” and players can now register for a planned 2023 beta.
high water comes from the makers of Golf Club: Wasteland, and is set in a similar world ravaged by climate change. The “story-driven isometric survival game” will feature a protagonist driving a motorized raft through the ruins of civilization and taking on armed guards in turn-based combat as they try to sneak onto a rocket to a better world. Coming in 2022.
Goat Simulator 3 is not a typo; that’s the name of this first sequel to 2014’s ridiculous breakout hit. A cinematic trailer for this sequel sees multiple goats causing absolute chaos behind a jogger on a boardwalk, firing rocket launchers and driving vehicles. Coming to the Epic Games Store in Fall 2022.
Midnight Fight Express stood out from the Game Fest crowd as a game developed by one person: a father from Poland. The isometric action involved the required brawling, dodging and shooting in some classy environments. A demo is now live on Steam ahead of a scheduled launch on August 23.
Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero are anime-infused action RPGs coming to the “Hoyoverse”. The short trailer was reminiscent of games like Genshin impact and Kidney vending machineswith a lot of knowledge that will probably make sense to people already immersed in the world of these games. Honkai: Star Rail is already available in beta, while Zenless Zone Zero has just started developing.
