Marisa Tomei tries to limit damage after she claimed this week she was stiff for playing Pete Davidson’s mother in The King of Staten Island

“I was actually just talking to Pete today because I was like, ‘I never got paid for that. Do you have? Can we talk in this age of transparency?’,” she said rolling stone in an interview published Thursday about the Judd Apatow-directed film written by Davidson and based on the loss of his father to the firefighter during 9/11.

Tomei hastily followed up on the bold claim, then brushed aside concerns about payment because she was “having a great time.”

“Judd’s approach to improv – which is extensive – I was intimidated,” she added. “I’m with all these stand-ups. It was so liberating. Really changed how I approach each character in the future.

The note about the payment was buried in the Q&A, where Tomei talked about playing Tom Holland’s quirky Aunt May in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the miscasting of her 1993 Oscar, which she picked up for Best Supporting Actress in My cousin Vinny† (Turns out the golden statue was just hiding in her mom’s house.)

But it seems someone happened to come across the throwaway response, telling: page six on Saturday, not only was Tomei paid, but she was also given more than $1 million upfront.

“Marisa Tomei was paid 100 percent for the film,” said a source close to the production. “She’s clearly confused.”

While Tomei’s representatives did not respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment, they said: rolling stone the actress was actually paid for the film. The confusion was over to Tomei referring to “mysterious contractual details.”

The King of Staten Island, starring Davidson and serving as executive producer, was released in June 2020. The dark comedy went on to earn $40 million amid the pandemic, surpassing its $35 million budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter

But aside from the alleged payment issue, Tomei would be sure to mention that she had a blast during the film, even praising Davidson by saying, “He’s just so real, and he’s unfiltered, but very sensitive. So he is almost an irresistible combination. And he looks good even though I played [his mom]†
