Sex for sale during a school ski trip gone wrong

A former school principal has been fired over a ski trip where a girl said she slept with three boys and was paid for sex by one of them.

Justine Drury was principal at CP Riverside School in Nottingham, which looks after children with behavioral and social problems, when the excursion took place in 2017.

The trip to Switzerland was attended by ten boys and two girls, in addition to Mrs Drury, another staff member and a student staff member.

A Teaching Regulation Agency panel heard that a pupil, known only as Pupil A, said she had sex with three of the boys, including one in exchange for £30.

One student filmed two others having sex and used the footage in an attempt to blackmail Student A into having sex with him, the panel heard.

Ms Drury said she “later found out” that sexual activity had been filmed and she “got the impression that student I had recorded some footage”.

On the third day, almost all the students broke down the door of the hotel restaurant and stole about 10 bottles of liquor, it was said.

On another occasion a pupil was found with a knife, some had been shoplifted and some children had gone to nightclubs unsupervised, the panel was told.

The TRA found the student-teacher relationship to be “completely inappropriate”.

Ms Drury also did not have written permission from the parents of all pupils to attend the meeting and risk assessments had not been sufficiently completed.

Ten of the students were known to have special educational needs, eight were known to be sexually active, seven were known to have substance abuse problems and three were involved in the justice system at the time.

Ms Drury had initially taken sufficient steps to try to prevent initial sexual activity, the panel found.

She had subsequently allowed students to remain unsupervised for long periods of time and took no action after knowing students were engaging in sexual activity.

The lack of supervision also led to the theft, it was said.

After the trip ended, Ms Drury did not tell school administrators and local authorities what had happened.

The TRA cited evidence from witnesses who said she “showed no understanding of why her actions were inappropriate and appeared to have no regard for anyone other than herself.”

Ms Drury, who did not attend her hearing, was banned indefinitely from teaching in any school, sixth form, relevant youth accommodation or children's homes in England. She can appeal the ruling after five years.

The panel said it saw “no evidence of Ms Drury's competence as an educator”.

It added: “Therefore, the panel considered that the above adverse public interest considerations outweighed any interest in retaining Ms Drury in the profession as her conduct was fundamentally inconsistent with the standard of conduct expected of a teacher , especially in her role as school director.”

CP Riverside School and the East Midlands Education Trust said in a joint statement: “When the allegations emerged following the residential ski trip in February 2017, the school co-operated with the police and the local authority's nominated officer, participating fully carried out their investigations and measures. its own research.

“Mrs Drury left the school in July 2017. East Midlands Education Trust supported the school's leadership between March 2017 and February 2018 before the school joined the Trust in March 2018.

“The school seeks to reassure all parents/guardians of students in our care that we take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously, hence the action taken at the time.”
