Cop and officer seriously injured in crash during traffic stop in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE – A sheriff's deputy and a city police officer suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries during a crash in Fort Pierce on Saturday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred as a St. Lucie County sheriff's deputy and a Fort Pierce police officer stood outside their vehicles during a traffic stop at US 1 and North 25th Street. Saturday at 11:25 p.m., a 41-year-old Vero Beach man was driving north on 25th Street in the right lane when he allegedly failed to turn and struck the rear of a sheriff's vehicle, FHP said.

The impact caused the deputy's vehicle to collide with the other two law enforcement vehicles and with the two officers, FHP said.

The driver involved in the crash, whose name was not released, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, FHP said.
